Like nearby Chagrin Falls, Gates Mills is known for its tranquil beauty. The Gates Mills Garden Club has had a significant impact on the traditions and beautification of the Village. The Club organizes special events, including biennial Flower Shows that consistently earn top awards from The Garden Club of Ohio and the National Garden Club. The Club undertook the restoration of the Gates Mills Arboretum and is an ongoing project that aims to replant additional native specimens, label trees, control the growth of invasive undergrowth, and maintain paths and markers. This beautiful park, nestled along the river at the foot of the iron walking bridge, is an attractive oasis for nature lovers. The North Chagrin Reservation provides year-round recreation for residents, offering paved walking and biking paths, multiple picnic areas and fields, and a Nature Center.
Part of Cleveland Metroparks, the reservation has 2,140 acres and is a wildlife sanctuary with Sanctuary Marsh and Sunset Pond, both popular areas for observing waterfowl. Gates Mills is also known for its equestrian farms and stables, including The Chagrin Valley Hunt, which began in 1909 thanks to a group of Cleveland hunting enthusiasts. The first Blessing of the Hunt was in 1927 by the Vicar of St. Christopher’s-by-the-River Episcopal Church. The ceremony continues today with the blessing of the riders, horses and hounds, and prayers that they all will return safely at the end of the day.
